Philippine Honey Robusta

We traveled over 200 miles in the most remote land of Northern Mindinao to get to know the coffee lands and their status. We slept on concrete floors and plain wood slabs, forded rivers and climbed ridiculously steep and treacherous hillsides. And we did most of this in the Malitbog indigenous tribelands trusty 4-wheel drive Toyota Rescue Service pickup hardened for off-road travel. Why the Rescue Truck? It was the only passenger vehicle in the province capable of climbing those rocky slopes and fording rivers and coming back to tell the tale. 

As we negotiated a particularly hairy hairpin turn in the road, Len quipped, "So, we're in the Rescue Vehicle... who rescues the Rescue Vehicle if we get stuck?" Ha ha. Well, we did get stuck trying to drive through a 3-foot-deep rocky river. And found the answer to that question. After an hour of jockeying the truck around with all the available tribal hands, eventually the Rescue Truck rescued itself by attaching its winch cable to a tree 20 yards away and dragging itself up out of the river.

When all was said and done, we visited two dozen farm plots... some accessible, some not really, explaining our mission of bring the Philippines Coffee Rejuvenation Project to the people. The mission was a great success and we got commitments from many farmers to begin the rejuvenation and get the training offered by the project. And of course, we managed to score some really fine Robusta that was the last of the season that had mostly ended a month earlier.

This is that Honey Process Robusta. Dried on tarps on concrete platforms with the fruit on, then pulped and dried in the sun and dehulled and put in a bag... just for you!

We found the most amazing soils and growing conditions on our trip, and were reminded once again that the Philippines can produce some of the world's most flavorful coffee.
