Colombia Castillo Peaberry Arabica

A new, delightful peaberry Arabica coffee that gets a thumbs-up from everyone! Juan Valdez would be proud! Colombia was once America's favorite coffee source. You can still see the "100% Colombia Mountain-Grown Coffee" marketing slogan on some brands. Why did this happen? Well, 40 or so years ago, coffee from Colombia was essentially its own genetic variety of Arabica, having been lovingly selected and line bred for decades into a taste profile that was unique in the world. This varietal is called Castillo. The Juan Valdez ad campaign played up this unique and wonderfully smooth profile.

Unfortunately, years of strife and climate change caused a collapse in the coffee tradition and a loss of the knowledge, to the point that Colombian coffee was a sub-par player on the world stage and it had lost that unique taste profile. Growers unaware of the traditional taste profile began cultivating citrusy, acidic varieties that did not cup favorably.

In the last few years we have seen a resurgence of the tradition and essentially the re-education of a new generation. When we tested this Castillo peaberry a smile came to our faces because we felt transported back in time to that unique taste experience that most younger people have not even experienced.

Arabicas predominated until the blight of 1870, when growers needed to hybridize to resistant varieties. The resultant strains had genes from Liberica and other unique, resistant species.
